More about this service

What Is Making Tax Digital for Income Tax?

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax is an HMRC initiative requiring eligible sole traders and landlords to maintain digital financial records and submit quarterly summaries of their income and expenses.

Rather than relying solely on annual bookkeeping, individuals within the scheme must use compatible software to record transactions and provide regular updates to HMRC.

Sandwell Accountancy Services can help you understand the requirements, prepare your existing records and establish a suitable digital bookkeeping system.

What Are Quarterly Updates?

Quarterly updates are summaries of income and expenses submitted to HMRC using Making Tax Digital-compatible software.

They are not four separate tax returns. Instead, they provide regular information based on your digital bookkeeping records, while your annual tax return remains necessary.

We can help maintain accurate records throughout the year, review your financial information and prepare the required quarterly updates as part of your agreed service.

How Do You Submit Making Tax Digital Updates?

Making Tax Digital updates must be submitted electronically using compatible accounting software.

We can review your existing bookkeeping arrangements and help you choose a suitable system based on your business, rental income and preferred way of working.

Where required, we can also help organise your records, set up bookkeeping categories and establish a straightforward process for sharing invoices, receipts and other financial information.

What Are the Making Tax Digital Deadlines?

Eligible taxpayers must submit quarterly updates to HMRC throughout the tax year, with deadlines generally falling on 7 August, 7 November, 7 February and 7 May.

Quarterly reporting does not normally mean paying Income Tax four times a year. Your tax payment obligations remain separate from the requirement to provide quarterly information.

We can explain which deadlines apply to you, what information is required and how to prepare your records in advance.

Making Tax Digital for Sole Traders and Landlords

Making Tax Digital affects eligible individuals receiving income from self-employment, residential property or commercial property.

For sole traders, this means maintaining digital records of business income and allowable expenses. Landlords may need to record rental income alongside relevant property expenses, including repairs, insurance and professional fees.

If you receive income from both self-employment and property, the qualifying amounts are considered together when assessing whether Making Tax Digital applies.

Our accountants can help organise your financial records and provide ongoing support tailored to your circumstances.
